Welcome to a new school year at Immaculate Heart of Mary School! My name is Jason Malonzo and I am thrilled to be your child’s teacher this year. I am a graduate of CSU-Los Angeles and Loyola Marymount University. I was born and bred in East Hollywood, and I am an IHM alumnus. This will be my tenth year serving in a Catholic school. I look forward to working with you towards the progression of your child’s education. Please review the information on this syllabus to familiarize yourself with our class policies.

- Classroom Behavior Management
- 1st warning - Informal
- 2nd warning - Formal
- 3rd warning - Parent Contact

- 2nd through 4th warnings include a loss of recess time and/or detention

- Homework - Students are expected to complete homework daily. Regular homework will be assigned daily from Mondays through Thursdays. On occasion, students will be assigned homework on weekends, but this only pertains to special assignments and/or projects. Please check your child’s Google Classroom for homework. Failure to complete homework will result in point deductions, as well as a loss of recess time. Any classwork that remains unfinished should be completed as homework.
- Reading Logs - In addition to regular homework, students are expected to complete a reading log every day. Students should complete sustained silent reading for at least 15 minutes every day at home. Students are welcome to choose books that interest them. Ideally, the students will choose chapter books or novels. They may also choose digital books from the Epic app. If you have questions about your child’s reading range and/or what books are appropriate, please contact me.
- Assessments - Tests and quizzes will be administered regularly for every subject. I will always inform your child with ample time beforehand to prepare for upcoming tests and quizzes. Please check your child’s designated folder for parents to review and sign their graded tests and quizzes. Assessment batches will be sent home at least once every week, and should be returned by Monday of the following week.
- Schoolspeak/Grades - I will update your child’s grades once per week for every subject. I strongly encourage you to review your child’s grades with him/her alongside you, so that you both monitor the grades as the year progresses.

- Academic Honesty - Academic honesty is expected in class. Any form of cheating/plagiarism is not tolerated and will result in major consequences.
- Dress Code/Attendance - Consult the IHM Student Handbook for detailed information. Please send your child to school with proper uniforms. Please avoid unnecessary absences and tardiness.
- Online/Hybrid Learning - The 5th grade class uses several apps/websites online. The primary platforms we use are Google Classroom and IXL. The list of apps/websites we use will continue to evolve throughout the school year, and I will train the students to use each of them efficiently.
